Female GP’s in Australia- excellent career opportunities!

There are excellent career opportunities for female GPs Australia wide, owing to the continuing shortage in regional, rural and remote areas of GPs, and in particular female practitioners.

Many practices are in fact actively looking for female GPs (but won't necessarily advertise this). Becoming a Rural GP is a unique experience, in more ways than one.  It gives you the opportunity to take time out to think and to reassess, at the same time as you are being well paid.  As a rural GP; you can spend time in stunning settings gaining valuable professional experience, personal experience and a different perspective on life.

Many female GPs consider rural practice as a major attraction because it offers variety, continuity of care, autonomy and the opportunity to practice procedural medicine.  Working in rural Australia allows you to work with the variety of clinical skills that only rural medicine can offer along with excellent training and support programs. You will often have the opportunity to provide services to local hospitals in specialist areas such as anaesthetics, obstetrics and gynaecology.

Other reason for choosing rural practice has to do with lifestyle opportunities that are available outside the busy capital cities. Working as a GP in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia can be a very challenging and fascinating experience.  There is no better way of learning about life and society in Australia than by working as a community Family Medicine Practitioner.

For some female GPs, moving to regional Australia has been the best decision of their lives.

"You use a wider range of your skills than in an office-based practice in the UK," according to Dr Margaret Smith, having left Scotland to take up a position in a small country town, some three hour drive from Sydney.

"Australia offers a fresh start in more ways than one way. You have a much sunnier outdoor lifestyle here and a more relaxed pace of life, with more time to spend with friends and family”.

Lack of access to female practitioners

Women’s health as an industry is very large, as every woman between puberty and death will have potentially at some stage issues in regards to women’s health where they will require information, education, support or require to have women’s health screening (i.e. Pap tests).

One large barrier for women living in regional, rural or remote areas is the lack of access to GPs, in particular female practitioners.  This is a very critical issue as it impacts on women’s ability to access not only cervical screening but also good health care, support and reliable up-to-date women’s health information with a practitioner of their choice.

Gender is an important factor for a large portion of women when they choose who they will attend, or if they attend for their next Pap test as well as for general support around women’s health issues. Many women prefer the practice styles of female general practitioners and certain cultural groups will need to see only female doctors. The doctor’s gender may also impact upon the disclosure of sensitive issues. Unfortunately, some women feel they have no option (such as having a male GP but would prefer to see a female) or have no GP.
